AVON Leadership: What it means to lead



 Avon Sales Leadership is one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, programs in the business industry. I find that Prospecting, (searching for people who have a need or want to run their own Avon business), is fairly simple, in the sense that people are looking for stability in today's recessive economy. I also find that appointing them is also fairly easy. But the Training and Development part can be a little tricky at times. Here's why:
  • On-the-spot prospecting and appointing creates interest and excitement, but after the excitement comes the reality that a person has just made a commitment to take a huge leap of faith into running his or her own business. 
  • That being said; the challenge of training others can lead you to believe that you are not doing all you can, but there is an old saying. "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink it." A realization on the part of those you lead has to come from a commitment within. After all, it is "their business". You are simply training and mentoring them.
So, what does it mean to lead? In any business, as a leader, you have to be knowledgeable, patient, and available. But what you can't be is the "doer" for another. It goes back to that old saying again...about the horse being led to water. We must find ways to motivate our team members, but as Avon Leadership, we must remember that it is the responsibility of our members to "spread their wings and fly". We are training them to run their own Avon Businesses. We are equipping them to be the next Avon Leaders. So, not only must we train them, but we must develop them. They must be able to stand on their own two feet, with continuous support from their upline leaders and managers. Always keep the line of communication open. Always keep in contact with your downline members, and make yourself available to them. Remind them of why they started their Avon businesses. Those goals that were discussed during their appointment and initial training contact was not a list of "things to do". Avon takes training its representatives very seriously, because they do want you to succeed and achieve your goals. Avon is the #1 beauty and cosmetics direct selling company, because they do believe in the people whom they service and the representatives whom they recruit and train. I can back this statement up personally as a President's Club Member and candidate for Honor Society, with my own Avon unit. Not to mention, I have watched and helped my own mother with her Avon business. I remember her District Manager coming over to our house, to help my mother prepare her orders for delivery. (My mother sold back in the days, where representatives had to mail in their orders). Now, thank God for electronics. We can submit our orders online or by phone.
